Welcome back to VV Eekly Update. Number two is where patterns start forming, so let’s see where this one takes us!
In preparation for creating a Steam page soon, I’ve been spending this entire week working on juice. Juice is a term that I recently just learned from the game dev community – it’s a little more advanced than just polish. It’s difficult to define, but you know it when you see it. Juice means that satisfying feeling games can give you when your actions feel responsive and meaningful. There’s a little bit of punch to your movement, a little bit of jazz to your actions, and everything feels alive when you interact with it. The world gives you a lot of oomph for your every key press!
Juice
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Are gifs worth a million words then? Let’s walk through the opening of the game.

When chests open, they have a slight delay before opening.

After choosing options from your chest, the light pops into life. Light rays strengthens and sun spots appear around the screen.

Taking damage pushes your character around, and the screen gets darker as your health gets lower.

Dealing damage produces a small explosion at first and continues with a nice damage marker. The enemies also have a nice shadow on them!
