VV Eekly Update #1 – Introductions!

Welcome to the very first VV Eekly Update, happening every Wednesday!! It’s very exciting to be writing this and knowing that you’re reading this right now. Thank you for your support!

In these Eekly Updates, I plan on providing small updates on the progress of the game and, occasionally, delving deeper on a single topic. Hopefully, it’ll be interesting for you to see what’s going on behind the scenes and to see a little bit about what the game looks like while under development.

Since this is the very first Eekly Update, let’s start with introductions!

Vyn and Verdan

Tada! Thanks to everyone who filled out the name survey, we have a game title!

Vyn and Verdan is a co-op action roguelike where two players collaboratively battle in rooms of an overgrown forest, reminiscent of MMO-style dungeons. Upgrade abilities, dodge enemies, and defeat rooms of bugs and vegetation in this forest adventure. Collaborate closely with your partner to win!

Like the above description says, Vyn and Verdan is heavily inspired by various co-op games and MMO dungeons that I have spent SO much time playing with friends. It is a strictly 2-player game, where players will have to closely coordinate with each other to win. Players will find that while it’s possible to win playing for themselves, the game will be much easier when coordinating with your partner.

Real gameplay with some temporary artwork

Vyn and Verdan is set in a rambunctious forest where bugs and vegetation have become hostile. You play as Vyn, the personification of winter, and Verdan, the personification of summer, to regain control of the forest.

Each play-through of the game features 14 normal rooms, 5 boss rooms, and 1 final boss room, for a total of 20 rooms. Each room has a unique set of enemies and environments for players to overcome, and player abilities and upgrades are randomly ordered between each run. Players will find that there’s significant skill expression in managing player abilities and navigating enemies, lending to various difficulty modifiers that will have to be earned to be defeated.

The gameplay loop has really come together, and I’ve been very happy to hear from play-testers that they really just want to keep playing. Thank you to everybody who’s tested this so far, and I hope more of you can play it in the future! Stay tuned for a potential demo coming out.
