I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s just me, but it feels like it&#8217;s been a really long time since the last VV Eekly Update&#8230; Like approximately a whole week and one whole hour? That doesn&#8217;t seem right! Somebody check the clocks! All of them!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jokes aside, today&#8217;s VV Eekly Update is dedicated to the power of games to absorb you into a different world. Games let you forget about the real world &#8211; to fantasize about different places where problems are immediately solvable, where you can overcome challenges, and where you can be someone else. I hope <em>Vyn and Verdan<\/em> and other games I make will be that someday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today&#8217;s VV Eekly Update, I&#8217;ll update you on my thoughts over the past two weeks on <a href=\"https:\/\/shrubbgames.com\/?p=268\" title=\"\">VV Eekly Update #20 &#8211; Road Map 2<\/a>. I&#8217;ve given it a lot of thought, and <strong>I&#8217;m unfortunately having to delay <em>Vyn and Verdan<\/em>&#8216;s release<\/strong> &#8211; possibly until June or July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time Estimate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past two weeks, I&#8217;ve been hard at work at estimating how much work there still is to do in <em>Vyn and Verdan<\/em>. Here&#8217;s a little piece of that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"667\" height=\"737\" src=\"https:\/\/shrubbgames.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shrubbgames.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image.png 667w, https:\/\/shrubbgames.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-272x300.png 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s quite a lot of work to be done! That much was obvious before, but it&#8217;s even clearer now. The real enlightenment for me was that row near the top, on the second row. It says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"562\" height=\"37\" src=\"https:\/\/shrubbgames.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shrubbgames.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1.png 562w, https:\/\/shrubbgames.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image-1-300x20.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To make that clearer: there are 57 days until my goal for the demo, January 2nd. There are 74 days of work to make the demo. And there are 17 more days of work than there are days remaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t seem feasible at all! Furthermore, those 57 days include the weekends and the upcoming holidays. Even if I worked every single day, including weekends and holidays, there are still 17 days of work remaining until I would be satisfied. This doesn&#8217;t even include any potential hiccups or bugs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, I said &#8220;until I would be satisfied&#8221;. So why not lower my standards?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demo Polish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve been putting a lot of thought into the point of the demo, since I&#8217;ve had to think about what I need to implement. I think the demo is a lot about the first substantial impression (the first impression is the Steam page). What do people think when they open the demo? How does it make them feel? Will they buy the game?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I see two points here. First: what makes people want to <strong>buy <\/strong>the full game? Second: what makes people want to <strong>not buy<\/strong> the game? For both of those, the <strong>polish<\/strong> of the demo should be good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why would people want to buy the full game from a demo? Hopefully, the game itself should be engaging, fun, and interesting. However, it&#8217;s difficult for the demo itself to communicate that. What do people see when they open the demo? They see that the knobs are shiny, that the levers are gleaming, and that all of the buttons feel satisfying to press. That&#8217;s <strong>polish!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand: why would people not buy the full game from a demo, even if they enjoy the gameplay? Usually, there&#8217;s bugs, and something feels inconsistent, and something else removes you from the immersion. That&#8217;s a <em>lack<\/em> of <strong>polish!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I realized that lack of content would not be a real reason to buy a full game from the demo. Obviously, the demo won&#8217;t have the full game! That&#8217;s the whole point! I think people will accept that reasoning, as long as it&#8217;s clear that there will be more content in the full game, and as long as that that&#8217;s obviously advertised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I&#8217;ve said all of that to really say: I want the demo to be polished. I don&#8217;t think I should lower my standards just to release the demo faster. I think the demo should put its best foot forward on its first impressions to people, and it seems like waiting longer to make that happen is worthwhile. Besides, I don&#8217;t think I would be happy with myself if I didn&#8217;t make my best effort!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, that means that <em>Vyn and Verdan<\/em> will likely be delayed until after the next Steam Next Fest, in June 2025. I am still aiming to release a demo before then, hopefully in the spring, and then I&#8217;ll be able to have a longer advertising period during the spring and early summer.
