VV Eekly Update #21 – Plants

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the VV Eekly Update! I hope the last week has been spantling, everyone has been plomping along gradiousoly, and that you’re feeling wantancular, ponkatime, and habanadingly pranty!

While I was thinking about what to write for today’s VV Eekly Update, I realized that I’ve been talking a lot about the various bugs that inhabit Vyn and Verdan‘s forest, but I haven’t talked much about the plants. Today, I want to show you the flora that I’ve been working on!

Let’s go level by level.

First Floor

The first floor’s plants are fairly simple. They ask you to dodge some projectiles coming in, but otherwise don’t do very much.

There are the classic mushrooms. You see them in a mushroom ring formation here, sending their little booglies at you in a predictable, straight line fashion.

These fiddlehead ferns are a little more dangerous. They send their spores at where you are, which then explode in a large circle. However, it’s fairly slow and predictable! It shouldn’t be too hard to dodge.

Second Floor

On the second floor, plants start to become a little more unpredictable, and they start to take up more space on the playing field.

Dandelions go through their life stages fairly quickly, and will send out slowly floating spores in a random direction. They last forever until they hit a wall or until they hit you!

Orchids will grow into having three flowers, and then reset again. Each growth into a new flower will make a larger and more threatening circle. They shouldn’t be too hard to manage IF you can get close.

Third Floor

On the third floor, plants get even MORE chaotic. Even worse, they start reproducing!

Vines will spread all over the place if not controlled. They sprout tendrils, and will eventually double in place. Of course, they can double again, and double again, and double again… You see where this is going.

Eagle ferns are the more grown-up version of the previous fiddlehead ferns. These will spray spores everywhere, and then reproduce if they hit you! Luckily, the new ferns aren’t too healthy, but you can see that they quickly grow out of control.

That’s all the plants that I’ve developed so far. I’m hoping to make at least one more plant per floor, and then be able to mix up how they get distributed into rooms so to create some semblance of variety. I’m fairly proud of how unique the plants ended up being, both in art style and in gameplay.

Of course, now I’m running out of plant ideas, so if you have thoughts on any of these existing plants or any possible new ones, please let me know in the usual Discord!
